What is oral and maxillofacial surgery?

Oral and maxillofacial (OMF) surgery is a surgical speciality. OMF clinicians are experts in caring for and performing surgery on the face, the oral cavity, head, neck, jaw, teeth, mouth and treating facial trauma. (Oral refers to areas of the lips, mouth, teeth, tongue, jaws, and maxillofacial to the head). These surgeons are specially trained to handle complex procedures, beyond what a family dentist or general practitioner is qualified to do. OMF surgeons train for at least eight years to qualify, and so if you've been referred by your dentist, you will receive expert care from incredibly experienced doctors.

How to become an OMF surgeon (in the US!)

OMF surgeons attend school for longer than almost any other specialism. After studying for two to four years to attain an undergraduate qualification, maxillofacial surgeons also train at dental school.

Finally, OMF surgeons must then undergo a residency for four to six years. So that could be up to ten years in training in order to become a fully qualified maxillofacial surgeon.

Surgeons are also trained in anaesthesia during their study, and so are able to ensure patients' safety in the operating theater.

What does an oral and maxillofacial surgeon do?

An OMF surgeon will treat patients with congenital disorders, or patients who may have undergone trauma to the face, teeth, neck, mouth or jaw through injury or accident. But, as well as performing complex and multifaceted surgeries, OMF surgeons perform teeth extractions and reconstructions of the face or jaw. They also address patients with tumors or cysts in the neck, jaw, or mouth.

Other procedures include treatment of wisdom teeth impactions, implant surgery, jaw re-alignment, and various cancers of the head or neck.

Other Maxillofacial Surgeries include:
  • Diagnosis and removal of impacted teeth or difficult tooth extractions
  • Diagnosis and removal of cysts, tumors, etc.
  • Diagnosis and treatment of oral & head and neck cancer
  • Diagnosis and treatment of congenital craniofacial malformations (craniofacial surgery)
  • Diagnosis and treatment of TMJ disorders.
  • Diagnosis and treatment of incorrect bite
  • Treatment of facial trauma from an accident

How does an oral and maxillofacial surgery run?

A specialised surgery will have a team of managers and administration staff who organise the smooth-running of the practice or practices. Some surgeries will operate as one of many others, and this is called a multi-location practice.

Throughout the day, surgeons and clinicians will see patients for consultations, procedures, and treatments. Surgeons and other practice staff will need to establish good, trusting relationships with patients, and so surgeons make an effort to get to know their patients and check in with them, throughout their OM health journey.

Some surgeons may also be involved in the direction and vision of their practice, and work closely with their administration staff to progress the surgery.

Practice administrators will be responsible for scheduling appointments, organising materials, rooms and inventory, budgeting, data collection and analysis, insurance and human resources.

Software to help oral surgeons streamline processes

But administrators and clinicians don't do all of this alone! Practice management software allows the team to organise the surgery and maximize its productivity and efficiency.

MaxilloSoft is a practice management software designed to make running an OMF surgery safe, smooth and easy for medical staff and patients alike. MaxilloSoft efficiently collects data across multiple platforms, including information from the anesthesia and vitals machines.

From solo practices to large multi-location groups, MaxilloSoft is custom configured to your practice. Make a great first impression. The patient’s name, reason for visit, and the name of their GP is always right at your fingertips. Patients love a high-touch, high-tech experience in the clinic, and MaxilloSoft's compatibility with tablets provides this experience. Our software is also a great tool for communicating with staff and patients, with automation facilities and systems in place in the software to communicate quickly and clearly between the front and the back.

MaxilloSoft increases oral surgery practice efficiency for your practice.
